I agree with you Nick, I think our society definitely emphasizes having lots of technology and fancy gadgets over being informed and knowledgable about what science can tell us about the universe, which probably does contribute to the "all about me" attitude many Americans have. While this attitude certainly does drive growth and innovation in technological fields such as video games, phones, and the like, it probably doesn't drive too many people to become scientists or researchers in fields other than these either.
