Political Ideas                         Discussion Project on Anarchism

Discuss and try to agree on answers to the following questions:

1.  In "On Authority," Friedrich Engels argues that the anarchists' opposition to coercive authority is profoundly misguided. By what reasoning does he try to establish this conclusion?

2.   How do you think anarchists like Kropotkin and Bakunin would reply to Engels' argument?

3.  Is Engels right to say that it is impossible to have organization without authority?  Or has he somehow failed to grasp what the anarchists are trying to do?
