PHIL 327: Ethics for the Information Age  --  Small group discussion project on Facebook Whistleblower Interview

  1. After you watch the 60 Minutes interview, jot down the ethical issues that you see being raised.
  2. Together with your fellow group members, try to come up with a jointly acceptable list of all the issues raised in the interview.
  3. If you have time, add on any other issues that come to mind from your readings for this week -- ethical issues, that is, that arise from the (allegedly) harmful effects of social media.
  4. What factual claims need to be true in order for these issues to be significant?
  5. What moral principles or values are being invoked (either explicitly or implicitly) when people 'sound the alarm' about these issues?

  6. Lookback question: Given what you've been able to gather from the interview, was the Facebook whistleblower justified in doing what she did (stealing documents from her employer, bringing them to regulators and the press, etc.)?

Don't forget to send in a ‘report’ with everyone’s name on it and today’s date.
